About the Scitation Library Service Center (SLSC)

What will the Scitation Library Service Center allow me to do?

By registering for the Scitation Library Service Center, you will be able to administer the online journals to which your library subscribes. In addition to a selection of help files and resources, registered librarians may:

  • Keep IP addresses up to date
  • Access COUNTER-compliant usage reports
  • Unblock suspended IP addresses
  • Submit OpenURL syntax
  • View a comprehensive list of publications to which your institution has access via Scitation
  • Access a selection of help files and resources, such as the Scitation User Agreement, details on using our link resolver, and more.

What is the relationship between the Scitation Library Service Center and the Scitation Statistics Usage Report Site (SURS)?

SURS is now part of the SLSC.

I have a username and password for the Scitation Usage Report Service. Do I need to register again for the Scitation Library Service Center?

No. The same username and password can be used to access the SLSC.

My institution has subscriptions to publications hosted on Scitation. How can I register?

Please click http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC-home/register.jsp to register. You will need to enter your Scitation Library Service Center account number, the pass code, your email address, and your desired username and password.

I want to register for the Scitation Library Service Center, but cannot find the pass code. What should I do?

Please use the retrieve pass code link at http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC-home/retrieve_passcode.jsp. You will need your SLSC account number. If you still need further assistance, please contact help@scitation.org.

Does the Terms of Use apply to both the Scitation Library Service Center and the Scitation Statistics Usage Report Site?

Yes.

I forgot my password. What should I do?

Please use the retrieve password link at http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC-home/get_password.jsp. If you still need further assistance, please contact help@scitation.org.

Account Management

What account information can I see?

You can see the following information related to your Scitation Library Service Center Account: account number, date created, data registered, data updated, username, password and contact email. You will also see information about the related Scitation account, which details your institution's online subscriptions: Scitation account number, company and department names, and address. Some Scitation accounts are tied to a Society account, which is explained below. You will see the society name and society account number for that account.

What is the relationship between the Scitation Library Service Center account, the Scitation account and the Society account?

It is possible that you will have three accounts related to your Scitation-hosted journals:

Society Account: Refers to the subscriptions held with the various society publishers whose titles are hosted on Scitation, such as AIP, APS, SIAM, SPIE, etc. The society publisher itself will likely refer to this simply as your "account number."

Scitation Account: Refers to the online holdings associated with your subscribed titles.

Scitation Library Service Center (SLSC) Account: This is your personal administrator account, which allows you to manage certain aspects of your Scitation-hosted journals.

For each subscribing or Society Account, you will have an associated Scitation Account and a personal SLSC account. As many libraries subscribe to titles from multiple Scitation-hosted publishers, it is possible that multiple Scitation and SLSC accounts will exist for a single institution.

Can a Scitation Library Service Center account have multiple library administrator contact emails?

No. Currently each SLSC account allows for only one administrator contact email.

I administer accounts for several different society publishers. How can I find other Society or Scitation accounts for which I am the administrator?

You can go to the Account Information page at http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC/account/account_overview.jsp and find accounts administered under your email address.

My institution has subscriptions to titles from various societies publishers, which are hosted on Scitation. Some of these subscribing Society accounts are not necessarily administered by me. How can I find out information about all the accounts held by my institution?

You can find other Scitation accounts that share the IP addresses in your Scitation account at the "Find Associated Accounts by IP Addresses" page.

A library administrator has left the position. Can I change the contact email for that SLSC account?

Yes, you are able to update the SLSC account's contact email address using the Email Update link: http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC/account/update_email.jsp.

Can I change the password for my account?

Yes, you are able to update your password using the Change Password link: http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC/account/change_password.jsp.

I don't see all the titles to which we have access. Why?
Why does my library have multiple Scitation Library Service Center accounts?

With more than 20 publishers' publications hosted on Scitation, it is likely that your library's subscriptions are held in multiple accounts. For each subscribing or Society Account, you will have an associated Scitation Account and a personal SLSC account. As many libraries subscribe to titles from multiple Scitation-hosted publishers, it is possible that multiple Scitation and SLSC accounts will exist for a single institution. Therefore, you will have to register each SLSC account in order to view and administer your entire collection of Scitation-hosted journals.

My account is tied to one specific society, but I am seeing publications from other societies. Why?

It is possible that your account is also part of a consortia, which subscribes to publications from other societies.

Which publishers' publications are hosted on Scitation?

Please view a current list of publishers with content hosted on Scitation.

Are all publications whose subscriptions are fulfilled by the American Institute of Physics hosted on Scitation?

No. Most are, but not all. Please view this chart of AIP Member Societies and Publishing Partners for a complete list of contact details for publishers hosted on Scitation, as well as AIP Member Societies.

IP Administration

The list of IP addresses in my Scitation account seems incomplete. What should I do?

You can add additional IP addresses by visiting the IP Administration section of the SLSC:
http://librarians.scitation.org/journals/doc/LIBSVC/ipadmin/request_addip.jsp

Can I add, update, or delete IP addresses in my account instantly?

No. You may submit requests to add, update or delete IP addresses. The requests need to be reviewed by the Scitation Help Desk and may take up to five business days.

Can I request to add, update, or delete multiple addresses at one time?

You may request to add up to 10 new IP addresses at one time. You may also request to delete multiple addresses at one time. But you may only request to update an IP address, one at a time.

Can I request to add, update, or delete IP addresses in multiple Scitation accounts at one time, including other accounts that are administered by a colleague in the same institution?

Yes. You may request IP changes not only for the Scitation account administered by you, but also accounts that share the IP addresses and that are administered by your colleagues. By requesting changes in related accounts, you take responsibility for making changes in these accounts. The administrators of these Scitation accounts will be notified by email when the request is approved or denied by the Scitation Help Desk.

I see an IP address in the List of Current IP Addresses. I want to update or delete this IP address, but do not see them in the Request to Update IP Form or the Request to Delete IP Form. What should I do?

It is possible that another administrator has a pending request to update or remove this IP address, thus putting a temporary lock on this IP address for other changes. You may check the Pending IP Requests section to see if the IP address is listed. If not, please contact the Scitation Help Desk at help@scitation.org.

How do I check the status of my requests?

Please check the Pending IP Requests page after submitting your IP change requests. After the Scitation Help Desk approves, denies or partially approves the request within 5 business days, the requests should show up in the IP Request History section and you will see the status for each IP address.

What should I do if I do not hear back from the Scitation Help Desk five business days after submitting my request?

You can contact the Scitation Help Desk by email (help@scitation.org) by phone:
1-800-874-6388 (U.S. and Canada), +1-516-576-2664 (all other locations), or +1-516-576-2691 (from 14:00 to 23:00 EST only).

I received an email from the Scitation Help Desk regarding a request to modify our IP addresses. I never submitted such a request. What happened?

The request was most likely made by a librarian who administers another Scitation account at your institution, which shares IP addresses with your Scitation account. In the Pending IP Request page or the IP Request History page, you will see who submitted the request and when.

I received an email stating that the Scitation Help Desk has partially approved an IP request. What does this mean?

This means some of the IP changes you requested were approved, but some were not. You can log into the Scitation Library Service Center and find out specifically which IP address changes have been approved, which have been denied and the reasons for denial.

I logged into my Scitation Library Service Center account, and found a request to add an IP address has been approved. However, I do not see this IP address listed in the list of Current IP Addresses. What should I do?

New IP addresses approved by the Scitation Help Desk should show up in your current IP list. If not, please contact the Scitation Help Desk at help@scitation.org.

IP Suspensions

I received an email telling me that an IP address has been suspended. Can I release the hold on this IP address via the Scitation Library Service Center?

Yes. Please visit the SLSC and click on "Release Suspended IPs." From this section, you will be able to view the log of download activity which triggered this suspension. We ask that you use this data to investigate what happened at your site, and provide an explanation for this activity when you release the hold on this IP address. Using the SLSC, library administrators will be able to resolve most IP suspensions instantly.

I logged into the Scitation Library Service Center, and found an IP suspension that I forgot about. I saw "Log data are only kept for 30 days." What does this mean?

You may contact the Scitation Help Desk (help@scitation.org) to obtain additional data for your investigation.

I logged into the Scitation Library Service Center and found an IP suspension of which I was not aware. I did not receive an IP Suspension Notification email, and I cannot release this IP via the Scitation Library Service Center. What should I do?

It is likely that there were repeated excessive activities from this IP address, which resulted in the suspension of this IP address. In this case, you will need to contact the Scitation Help Desk (help@scitation.org) with an explanation, and if approved, the Scitation Help Desk will release the IP for you.

I see that the IP address which has been suspended is related to multiple Scitation accounts. If I release this IP, will the other accounts be affected?

Yes. When you release the hold on this IP address via the Scitation Library Service Center, the administrators of the related Scitation accounts will receive an email that the IP has been released.

Can I find out details of all the currently suspended IP addresses and of all the released IP addresses?

Yes. If the IP is currently suspended, you can go to the Suspended IP page and find out details for that suspended IP. If the IP has been released, you can go to the Released IP page and find out details for that IP.

View Usage Reports

Can I go directly from the Scitation Library Service Center to view the usage reports, or must I log in separately?

From the View Usage Reports Overview page within the Scitation Library Service Center, you can click on the "View Usage Reports" button, which will take you directly to the Scitation Usage Report Service, which is hosted on a different site. You will be prompted to logon again using your Scitation Library Service Center username and password.

I clicked on the "View Usage Reports" button but did not see the reports. Instead, I saw an error message. What should I do?

It is possible that the connection between the Scitation Library Service Center and the Statistics Usage Report Service is broken. Please contact the Scitation Help Desk at help@scitation.org.

My institute subscribes to publications of a certain society publisher, but I do not see the SURS reports for these publications. Why?

You may need to log in to each different SURS account in order to collect usage statistics for all Scitation-hosted publications you subscribe to. Further, not all Scitation-hosted publishers participate in the SURS service. To see the list of participating publishers and titles, go to: http://www.scitationreports.org/Docs/Titles.aspx

Is there a FAQ list just for the Statistics Usage Report Service?

Yes, the FAQ is available here: http://www.scitationreports.org/Docs/Faq.aspx

OpenURL

What is the function of the OpenURL Form?

It will allow Scitation to set up the information needed to allow your Institution to utilize OpenURL.

Will the OpenURL work immediately after I submit the correct information via the Open URL section of the SLSC?

No, it needs to be reviewed and processed by the Scitation Help Desk. This can take up to 1 business day.

How do I verify whether the OpenURL is working on Scitation?

OpenURL links are displayed on tables of contents, abstracts, and search result pages, near the links to access the full text. You should see either the text string that you supplied or the graphical image that you indicated on those pages. The text string and graphical image are both linked to the base resolver that you indicated on the OpenURL form. Once you click on that link, you should be taken to your OpenURL resolver.
